Step 1
Choose an unused and worn wooden frame out of your attic, garage or purchase an inexpensive frame from a thrift store before applying gold leaf.
-
Step 2
Sand and paint the frame with primer to prepare it for gold leaf. Start with a heavier grit paper and work your way to a finer grit until the frame is smooth.
-
Step 3
Apply the gold leaf to the frame using a soft wash brush of natural hair. Use the brush to push the gold leaf in place.
-
Step 4
Rub the leaf with balled up nylon to remove any creases. Apply clear polyurethane to the gold leaf to seal it.
-
Step 1
Paint the frame with a mixture of water and rabbit skin glue, then gesso which can be purchased in any art supply store. Allow to dry.
-
Step 2
Put on yellow, black or red clay with a mixture of water to the frame and let dry.
-
Step 3
Rub on a thin layer of rubbing alcohol and water. Wait until dry to apply leafing.
-
Step 4
Cut the gold leaf into small pieces. Work in an area with a lot of space as the leafing is a delicate material.
-
Step 5
Pick up the gold leaf using a small squirrel hair brush and apply to frame. Press into place using a rubbing stone.
