How to Hustle

Harmless hustling, for free drinks and other things, can be a fun activity. It can be as simple as a party trick, or a display of science (yes, that can be useful). All it takes is a few people to make it work betting on an outcome or event that they think will go one way—fortunately for you, the outcome is always the hustler's way.

Make Whiskey and Water Change Glasses

1. Convince people to bet against you, because it seems impossible. They're wrong, of course. Place your driver's license over the top of a shot glass filled with water.
2. Flip the shot glass over so that your license is between the whiskey and water glasses.
3. Let gravity take its course. Because water is heavier than whiskey, it'll force the whiskey into the top glass.

Propose to Drink From Your Glass While it's Under a Hat

4. Get a round of drinks for you and your friends without paying by proposing to drink your from your glass while it's under hat. The catch: you can't touch the hat yourself to do the trick. People will be sure you can't win and so will agree to buy you the round if you're successful.
5. Pretend to down your drink by sticking a straw beneath the hat and sucking on it.
6. Watch as the betters lift the hat to see if you've been successful, thank them politely and quaff your drink. You won: you drank your drink without touching the hat yourself, and you and your friends get a free round of drinks.

Keep Your Cup Full by Proposing a Shadow Bet

7. Keep your cup and that of your friends full by proposing a shadow bet. The betters must emulate you, no matter what you do, and if they can't, you get a round of free drinks for you and your friends.
8. Set the table so that everyone has their cups with a coin beside it.
9. Lift the cup, take a drink, move your coin a little to the left, take a drink, move the coin to the right, take a drink, move the coin toward the edge of the table, then spit your drink into the cup. You'll win every time.

Move an Olive From One Beer Mat to Another Without Touching it

10. Have someone buy you a drink by proposing to move an olive from one beer mat to another without touching it.
11. Empty your glass, place it upside down over the olive, and begin moving the glass around in circles so that the olive travels up the side of the glass.
12. Move the glass containing the spinning olive quickly to the other beer mat, and gently slow the rotations of the olive until it sits on the second beer mat.
