Order Raw Film Stock

When shooting any kind of film project on actual film stock, you must order it from a specialized dealer, and it is critical to know how to order the correct kind of film.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what film stock you would like to order and how much of it. Raw film stock is measured in rolls and feet. It is usually sold in 100- and 400- foot rolls.

    • 2

Will you be shooting in color or black and white? You'll obviously need to know before you order.

    • 3

You'll be ordering your stock by a code number, based on desired sensitivity to light so depending on who's going to be directing the film, you'll need to get this light information.

    • 4

Exactly what kind of camera will be used? You're going to need the specific make and model of the camera that will be using your film because that will have a direct impact on your film purchase.

    • 5

This may sound obvious, but know if you'll be needing color or black and white film. Of course, the vast majority of stock used today is "normal" (visible spectrum) color.

    • 6

Ask when your film is expected to arrive after you place your order. The person who has taken your order should have a general idea of when the film should be delivered.

Tips & Warnings

  • Film companies often give a large discount on your film order if you are a student. You must often send some form of proof, such as a valid student ID card.

  • If you are unsure about exactly how much film to order, consult the salesperson at the company you order from or ask a knowledgeable friend.

  • If you must make a choice between ordering too much or too little, always over-order. You can always sell the film you don't end up using, but if you run out of film stock, you're out of luck.
