Volunteering is rewarding--lend a hand and make someone else's day a little easier. There are many organizations in your own community that would welcome your help. Volunteering can also lead to a paying job. Follow these steps to become a volunteer today.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet access

Step1
Write a list of all your skills. You may have a job or a hobby that could help other people. Look at your list and decide how you could use these skills to help a local organization.
Step2
Research agencies in your area and find out who needs volunteers. Often non-profit organizations welcome volunteers for a variety of tasks.
Step3
Ask friends if they know anyone who needs a volunteer. Word of mouth is a great way to find a job.
Step4
Talk to members of your local church or community centre. You may be able to assist with current programs by helping an instructor or another member of the organization.
Step5
Check with your local school. Many schools welcome volunteers. Volunteers help teachers in the classroom, prepare craft material and assist on class trips.
Step6
Write a resume and cover letter. Resumes show what you have done and what you are capable of doing. Cover letters outline your skills and desire for a particular position. Using resumes and cover letters show organizations that you are serious about volunteering.
Step7
Search the Internet for volunteer opportunities. Visit websites such as volunteer.ca and volunteering.com for information on being a volunteer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be enthusiastic.
  • Treat the volunteer position just like a regular job. Be punctual and dress appropriately.
  • You may need a criminal background check to volunteer with children.
