A future bet is a wager that is placed far in advance of the event to gain better odds. Example of futures are betting the teams that will be in the Super Bowl, placing a wager on who will win the NL Central in baseball or betting on who will win the Heisman Trophy. Betting a future can be risky, but the reward can far outweigh the risk. To learn how to bet a future, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open an account at a online sportsbook if you don't already have one. This is one of the easiest places to bet futures since they're placed so far in advance and you have to return to the sportsbook to gain your winnings.

  2. Step 2

Determine what future you want to bet. Futures can come in any sport and utilize teams or individuals. Stick with a sport you know and a team or player you feel passionate about.

  3. Step 3

Bet early. The earlier you bet a future, the better odds you're going to get. For example, if you want to be the winner of the Super Bowl, do it before training camp opens. That way, no one will know anything new about the team, especially the oddsmakers.

  4. Step 4

Don't overwager. Remember, this money is going to be locked into this bet for several months. If you bet your entire bankroll, you won't be able to bet much else during the season.

  5. Step 5

Watch the season unfold and hope for the best. If at the end you win, the payday will be very sweet. If you lose, just remember that you hadn't seen that money for several months anyway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get carried away with your bet. Even the smallest wager can net a huge profit if you bet early enough. Also, it won't ruin your bankroll.
  • Some people like to place a small wager on a future at the beginning of the season just to see what happens. Try it with a sport that has a short season, such as college football, and see how you do. If it works out, it will be easier to put down that bet for a longer amount of time.
  • Sports gambling can be addictive. If you think you might have a problem, seek help.
