Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Order a franchisee information package from two or three of the franchises you find most interesting. Typically you will be asked for contact information so one of the sales reps can follow up with a phone call or email. Like all salespeople, their job is to get you in the door and signing papers. Don't fear this--you can always say no.
Step2
Hire a franchise consultant if you still feel a little shaky. They are experienced with new business owners and can help walk you through the maze of opportunities, paperwork and options.
Step3
Visit the corporate office for a more detailed look at the offerings. Training is often available at the office and you can meet the principles to help you make your final decisions. Often the culture of the executive offices will make a good or bad impression.
Step4
Use your own attorney to look over any paperwork before you sign. While the consultant is useful as you learn the maze in the franchise world, they are usually paid for referrals by the franchise system.
