From Quick Guide: Instant Messaging
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet Access
  • MSN Messenger software
  1. Step 1

Connect to the Internet. Go to the messenger.com website. Sign up with MSN messenger.com. It's free. Use your email address and a password. Download the free program from the MSN site. The program will be installed on your computer and an MSN icon will appear on the extreme lower right of your screen.

  2. Step 2

Click the "MSN Icon" which looks like the outline of two people's upper bodies at the bottom right of your screen. A menu will appear. Click "Open MSN Messenger" and the messenger window opens up.

  3. Step 3

Sign in to your account by typing in your email address and password. Click "Sign In." A window opens so you can start chatting with any friends who are online. The panel shows your picture and your email address at the top. Just below, you will see the message saying you are online.

  4. Step 4

Right click on a person's name. This is on the list where you see all your messenger contacts with offline or online beside each name. Click "Send an Instant Message."

  5. Step 5

Type a message to the person. Click "Send." Wait for the person to answer you. You can see when the person is typing a letter to you.

  6. Step 6

Click "Tools" or "Actions" to use some of Messenger's other features. Use emoticons if you want to send an icon to someone as part of your message.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Invite" button at the top of the chat window to invite another person to your conversation. You can now chat with two people at once. Click the red X at the top of the screen to close the chat window. Click "File" and then "Sign Out" to be offline.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a microphone or webcam to chat instead of typing your message.
  • Make sure your status is set to online if you want people to contact you.
  • Don't invite anyone you don't know into your conversation. They may not be who they say they are.
