How to Keep a Raccoon as a Pet

Having a pet raccoon is unlike having a dog or cat. It's a way of life. You have to completely alter the way in which you do things. You have to be able to provide a lot of time, attention and care, just like having a child. If you're able to do this, then a raccoon just may be the pet for you. Follow these steps to learn how to keep a raccoon for a pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure it's not illegal to have a pet raccoon in your state. You may need to get a permit if it is legal. If you're able to, it's best to get him from a breeder or someone who has had him since he was very young.

    • 2

Find a veterinarian who is willing to treat a raccoon. Even if they are legal in your area, they are not well accepted by many vets due to the raccoon's aggressive tendencies.

    • 3

Get your pet raccoon vaccinated against rabies and distemper. Keep in mind that even if your pet is vaccinated she will be confiscated if she bites someone who reports it.

    • 4

Give your pet raccoon a lot of attention. These are very needy animals and will squeal loudly when they want attention. Be prepared to make your pet raccoon the center of your universe.

    • 5

Provide your raccoon with his own room and his own things. He will be less likely to destroy your things if he has his own to tear holes into. Raccoons like to burrow.

    • 6

Feed your pet raccoon fresh fruits, vegetables, turkey, chicken and fish. Red meat should be avoided because raccoons are prone to obesity when domesticated and this can cause heart failure.

    • 7

Bathe your raccoon with shampoo only twice a year to prevent loss of body oils. Fill the tub up with water regularly and let him play in it. This will reduce body odor and provide him with some fun water play.
