Bonefish are found in tropical, coastal waters in shallow areas called flats. Although they feed on crustaceans and small fish, bonefish average about 10 lbs. as adults with the largest fish approaching 20 lbs. These impressive fighters attract anglers from around the world for a test of skill and strength. It takes skill and patience to catch bonefish, but it is worth it for the sport. Read on to learn how to catch bonefish.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hire a guide. Your guide will use a pole to propel the boat because engine noise would spook any fish that are in the flats. You can replace the guide with a partner once you have some bonefishing experience.

  2. Step 2

Choose your gear. Fly fishing for bonefish is more popular today, but spinning with bait, lures or a combination is also done. Commonly used fly patterns include the Crazy Charlie, Gotcha and Bitters. Some bait fisherman use chum to attract fish.

  3. Step 3

Look for fish. Fishing for bonefish is more visual than most other types of fishing. Polarized sunglasses make it easier to see through glare.

  4. Step 4

Stalk a fish until you are in position to cast to it. It helps if you learn your casting range and practice accuracy before hitting the flats.

  5. Step 5

Present your lure or fly to the fish and prepare for a strike. Once the fish hits, set the hook. Be prepared for the fight that follows. The fish may strip your reel. Land the fish quickly to avoid causing injury.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bonefish can also be caught by wading in the flats.
  • Use barbless hooks to facilitate the release of the bonefish that you catch.
  • When you catch a bonefish, don't remove the fish from the water unless it is necessary in order to remove the hook.
  • Bonefish got their name for a reason, don't try to eat them.
