How to Propagate a Peace Lily

The only possible propagation method of a peace lily in a home environment is by division. Although the plant produced frequently blooms, germination of seeds is difficult. A mature peace lily plant produces several small crowns at its side consisting of roots and leaves. If separated from the parent plant, these can grow into new, mature peace lilies. Unlike many plants, propagation can be performed any time of year. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the base of the peace lily plant and look for crowns of leaves growing to the side of the main crown. You can identify a separate crown because some of the leaves will be facing the opposite way of the main crown. Choose a crown with at least 2 leaves. If crowns aren't present, the peace lily cannot be propagated.

Use a sharp knife to cut away a crown from the parent plant. Try to get as many roots as possible. Removing the root ball from the pot may help. If you fail to get any roots with the crown, select another crown and try again.

Fill a 3-inch pot with the same potting mix the parent plant was growing in. If you do not know the mix, use standard potting mix. Place the peace lily propagation into the pot. Attempt to plant the crown at the same depth in the potting mix as it was in the parent plant.

Water the new peace lily plant immediately. Begin treating the new peace lily as a mature plant right away, with the exception of fertilizer. Fertilizer must not be applied for three months. New growth should occur within a month.
