How to Tell if a Xbox 360 Needs to Be Serviced

The Xbox 360 has not gotten off to a great start. The Microsoft console has had reports of being too poorly manufactured and unstable to have been released. Many who purchased the Xbox 360 have had numerous problems, and most center around the "red ring of death." How can you tell if your Xbox 360 has a big enough problem to need service? Read on to learn more.

Instructions

  1. Inspection and Home Repair

    • 1

Check the ring of lights that encircles the power switch. The "red ring of death" means any of the lights turning red. This means something is wrong.

    • 2

Check which of the four light quadrants around the switch are red. If all but the upper right quadrant are red, it's usually a hardware failure. The main quadrant to check for a hardware failure is the upper left one.

    • 3

Unhook and reattach the cables; then reboot the system. This is usually the best you can do yourself it it's a hardware failure. If this doesn't work, call the repair center.

    • 4

Check if the console is overheating. The lower right quadrant turns red for this. Unplug the power supply and let the machine cool; then look for a better place to store it to prevent overheating.

    • 5

Check the AV cable, especially if all four lights are flashing. Make sure it "clicks" when you insert it into the unit. This is the easiest problem to correct.

    • 6

Remove the hard drive; then reboot the machine. If the problem persists, call the repair center.

    Service at the Repair Center

    • 7

Call the repair center and explain the problem. Let the people there know you tried all of the above options.

    • 8

Wait for an empty box to arrive. The repair center will send this to send the system in.

    • 9

Pack and mail only the console to the center. Don't include the hard drive, disks, controllers or cords as they might not be returned.

    • 10

Wait for the repair center to send either the repaired console or a replacement one. This may take between one to two weeks.
