Welcoming a new baby into the family is a joyous occasion, unless you're the family pet. Many pets are unprepared for the stresses that come along with a new baby, which is why it's imperative that you start working with your dog early to get him prepared for what lies ahead. With a little bit of training and understanding, both baby and dog can live harmoniously together. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start as early as possible. You have nine months to get ready for baby's arrival, so start working with your dog early to prepare her for a new baby. Set up the nursery along with any swings or exersaucers early on, so that your pet gets used to the new items before the baby enters the picture.

  2. Step 2

Brush up on training. A well-trained dog is likely to get along better with a new baby, so if your dog doesn't know the basics, now is the time to enlist him in a basic training class.

  3. Step 3

Give her a place of her own. Little ones can quickly take over a house, leaving your pets feeling left out and resentful. Set up a space that's just for your dog, away from the hustle and bustle of a new baby.

  4. Step 4

Get him acclimated to children. Invite over friends and family members with small children, to give your dog a taste of what children are like. Watch them carefully, and remove your pet at the first sign of aggravation or stress.

  5. Step 5

Introduce the new baby through smell. Once your new baby is born, you can prepare your dog by having a family member come home prior to your arrival with a used baby blanket. Introduce the blanket to your dog, and allow her to get used to the smell of your baby.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take it slow and don't force the issue. In the beginning, your dog may do little more than occasionally smell your new baby. If he doesn't show an interest in the new family member or starts acting out, remember that it's only temporary.
