How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Alabama

You are eligible to receive disability parking space permits in Alabama if you are a resident of the state and qualify as disabled as defined by Alabama regulations. The disabled parking permits are available as placards or disability license plates. Your physician must certify the disability as limiting your mobility and as a temporary or long-term disability.

        Compare your disability to the definition of qualifying disability under Alabama law to decide whether you are eligible to obtain disability plates or disabled parking placards. Allowable disabilities under the law include conditions that limit your mobility and ability to walk.

        Download the application form MVR 32-6-230 from the Alabama Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division website. Complete the applicant sections on the front of the form. Select the type of permit you want to receive--either the disability access license plates or the disability access placards.

        Provide your physician with the application form for certification of your disability. The physician must also indicate whether your disability is long-term or temporary. Disabilities lasting 6 months or less are classified as temporary.

        Take the completed application to your local County Tag Office for issuance of the disability plates or placards. There are no fees charged for issuance of the parking placards. There are fees for the disability plates as detailed on the application form.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If your disability is classified as long-term by your physician, the application certification covers the first 5 year period. You self-certify the disability every 5 years after that.
