How to Get a Job in Computer Programming

Computer programming is a very diverse field. Jobs range from mainframe or green-screen development to website design and maintenance. Finding a job in computer programming is fairly simple. Both large and small companies rely on computer programmers to make the front end of the business run smoothly. Programmers make the day-to-day operations of a company as simple as possible for employees and customers.

1. Get a college degree in computer science or computer information systems. Most colleges offer job placement assistance through a career development center upon graduation. Universities also offer job fairs, where prospective employers visit campus to conduct interviews and hiring.

2. Take classes at a local technical or community college. This allows additional training in other languages if desired.

3. Decide what programming language to focus on. There are several options, ranging from mainframe to web-based.

4. Find companies that hire programmers in the programming language chosen. This requires some research and can also be accomplished by calling companies directly to ask what types of programmers they hire.

5. Ask professors for letters of recommendation. Include these with a resume when applying for jobs.

6. Keep examples of past work. Some employers require that examples are submitted with a resume for consideration for a job. These can include programs on disk or websites designed and created.

7. Join a networking club for professionals. These offer an easy way to meet people who work for or hire for local companies. Take advantage of these social events to not only get information to people, but to ask questions about jobs also.
