How to Hang Light Fixtures

Hanging new light fixtures can improve your house immeasurably. They can enhance any decorations you have already set in motion. Electricity can be dangerous, so when changing or adding a light fixture, always use caution.

Things You'll Need:

  • Screw drivers
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire nuts
  • Voltage detector
  • Drill
  • Drill gun
  • Light fixture
  • Light bulbs
  1. Step 1

    Determine which breaker operates power to that receptacle or fixture. Breaker panels are most commonly located in the garage, the side of the house or in a utility room.

  2. Step 2

    Take a voltage detector to ensure that the voltage is turned off. The most common voltage of a light fixture is 110.

  3. Step 3

    Secure the fixture support bracket to the bell or fixture box.

  4. Step 4

    Connect the wires and follow manufactures wiring diagram. When wiring, you should keep white to white and black to black and always connect the ground wire.

  5. Step 5

    Check that wire connections are secure and tight. Wire connections are connected by wire nuts.

  6. Step 6

    Hang light fixture in desired area.

  7. Step 7

    Install light bulbs, and turn on breaker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Specific wattages are determined by the manufacturer and should be strictly followed for safety reasons.
  • Check illumination for the type of fixture you want to put in the desired area, to make sure that the light fixture is a good fit.
  • Breakers must be turned off before starting this project to prevent personal injury.
