Whether you own a restaurant or simply want to host a special event, you will need a liquor license if you plan to serve liquor to your patrons or event attendees legally. Each state in the United States has specific rules for applying for a liquor license, and some local governments require additional applications.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate information from your state government. Typically, state governments consist of different departments, and for a liquor license, you will need to contact the department responsible for alcohol regulation. The easiest way to locate state government offices is by searching the Internet for the state government website. Depending upon your state, you may also have to apply for a dual license from your state and local town or city.

  2. Step 2

Identify the type of liquor license you wish to apply for based upon your type of business and the license options your state offers. Some governments require separate licenses for liquor and other forms of alcoholic beverages, so be sure to consider this when applying for your license.

  3. Step 3

Read all available documentation for holding a liquor license, including application requirements, liquor codes, laws, violations and penalties. Take a proactive stance in educating yourself on the legal aspects of holding a liquor license so that you are aware of and can adhere to regulations.

  4. Step 4

Request an application form from the government department. More than likely, you should be able to find these application forms online.

  5. Step 5

Fill out the requested information on the form completely and then submit it to the proper authorities. If supplementary documentation is required, be sure to include this information with your form. Most licenses require payment with the application so provide the proper form of payment to avoid processing delays.

  6. Step 6

Make a copy of your application and obtain instructions for following up on processing progress.
