Know that many employers will train employees with mechanical aptitude to become compressor mechanics or pay for them to attend training schools. Some large companies also have their own compressor training schools. Compressor mechanics must posses strong analytical skills and understand different types of engines, including diesel and gas.

Become familiar with reading blueprints so that you can properly diagnose and solve problems on a variety of multiple compressor systems. Mechanics should be able to disassemble compressors in order to repair them.

Develop communication and customer service skills, which are essential when working in the field.

Know that compressor mechanics must be physically fit and able to work extended shifts. Mechanics may be exposed to extreme temperatures, noise and fumes on a regular basis.

Brush up on computer and data entry skills, which may be used to order and keep track of supplies needed to repair compressors.

Stay up to date with the latest compressor technology and sharpen mechanical and diagnostic skills by attending continuing education classes offered through technology schools and community colleges.

Know that most employers who hire air compressor mechanics require a high school diploma or GED equivalent, a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and may conduct drug screening and background checks.

Know that some employers, such as those dealing with ships, require additional certification, including International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and United States Coast Guard (USCG) licenses.
