Attend local college courses or enrolling in a specialized workshop at a vocational school. In a full course you will learn how to assess a site and detect mold, the type of equipment used in the field and what the protocols are for cleaning and decontamination. A course can also teach you the safety guidelines created by the government to protect yourself.

Consider becoming a licensee/representative for a well-established company that offers a treatment and maintenance program to the public. Many of the companies that specialize in mold repair train people who want to start a franchise. The training is free and most companies will let you set your own pace, including ongoing education and continuous advertising.

Keep in mind that earning a basic certification as a mold technician shouldn't take more than a few days. Many places offer courses that can be completed over a single weekend and are surprisingly affordable. Since the investment of time and money is so minor, it certainly justifies getting the training before looking for a job.

Look into the IAQA and IAQ Training Institute (a division of the Indoor Air Quality Association) for information on workshops, certifications and training options if you don't have anything available nearby (see Resources below). The courses offered by the association focus on practical expertise, not only demonstrations, and are great way to get started if you have no previous knowledge of the industry.

Make sure you are in excellent health and do not suffer from allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems. If you do, the conditions of the buildings and areas where this type of job is conducted can be problematic and make the work itself unbearable.
