Blend Your Own Anti-Stress Cup of Tea

Homemade herbal tea is one of the things that helps me get through the stressful times. I've found that since we lead stressful lives, we need to take the time to relax. I like to handle my stress gently - with exercise, diet, and gentle herbal teas.

I have found that drinking a cup of relaxing herbal tea each night can really help. There are certain herbs that can help promote sleep and are also not habit forming like prescription sleeping pills are. Feeling relaxed and sleeping enough are both essential to keep the stress levels in check. Here's how you can make a cup on your own.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Chamomile, lemon balm, oatstraw, passion flower, stinging nettle or any herbal blend that is said to promote relaxation
    • A pretty mug
    • Boiling water
    1. Instructions

      • 1

Choose the herbal tea that you want to drink. To start with, you can pick from the list at the top. Those herbs are all of my favorites. I would try each herb individually at first.

      • 2

Bring water to a boil in a stainless steel saucepan. Place the tea bag in your mug. If you are using loose tea, place it in a tea strainer (follow the instructions on the package for your tea strainer).

      • 3

Let the herb steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag or leave it in while you drink it if you want something stronger. Oatstraw and chamomile are two herbs that can be left in the mug for a while.

Sweeten as desired. You can also add milk. Play some relaxing music or read while you sip your tea.

Once you get to know the herbs individually, you can start to combine them. I would start combining them in pairs. Stinging nettle and oatstraw, for example, combine very well together. You can also try lemon balm and nettle, chamomile and oatstraw, or passionflower and chamomile. As you become familiar with the paired combinations, you can blend them as you see fit.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Try a different herb each night to see which one you like best.

    • Let your taste buds rule your choices. Which herbs taste the best to you?

    • Research the herb to make sure it's right for you.

    • Consult with your doctor before trying anything new. Remember, just because it is natural doesn't mean it is safe.
