Edinburgh’s Museum of Scotland is one of the city’s prime attractions. With a huge and diverse range of exhibits housed in a beautiful historical building, the museum is well worth a visit when in Scotland’s capital. Here’s how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to www.nms.ac.uk/nationalmuseumhomepage.aspx. Here you can find all the information you will need about the National Museum of Scotland, including exhibitions.

  2. Step 2

Decide how you will get to the museum. It is found on Chambers Street, near to the Royal Mile. Many buses go by the Museum, and Waverley Train Station is only 15 minutes walk away. Go to www.travelinescotland.com for more details. You can park your car in the Pay and Display car-park found on Chambers Street.

  3. Step 3

Go to the museum in the morning. It opens at 10 a.m. and shuts at 5 p.m. You will need most of the day if you want to take in all the National Museum has to offer.

  4. Step 4

Pick up a free map as you enter the museum. It is a huge building so a map will prove useful in planning a route around it!

  5. Step 5

Join one of the free tours starting throughout the day. Highlights, themed and children specific tours are on offer. Expert guides will be able to answer all your questions on the exhibits.

  6. Step 6

Let your children experience the Art Cart. It is situated in the main hall and offers colouring-in and craft activities for children.

  7. Step 7

Eat lunch at one of the Museum’s fine cafes. Café Delos, located in the main hall of the museum, has been recently refurbished and offers a good selection of food and drink. The other café is called Soupson and offers a wide selection of lunchboxes, soups and sandwiches, as well as a children’s play area so you can enjoy your lunch in peace. They are both open 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

  8. Step 8

Visit the Museum shop. It offers more than just souvenirs, with some fine and unusual items on display. In particular, a range of crystal is available.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave the Museum before 4 p.m. if you have brought the car. This should help you avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic.
  • Don’t miss the large working exhibits such as The Millennium Clock in the main hall.
  • The museum is quietest on weekday mornings. Edinburgh schools are off on Friday afternoons so this period tends to be a little busier than normal.
