Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Choose Swedish massage if you've never had a massage before. The most common type of massage in the United States, it is also known as massage therapy. Swedish massage uses long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil. It is gentle and relaxing.
Step2
Aromatherapy massage is a traditional massage therapy with one or more scented plant oils, called essential oils, to address specific needs.
The massage therapist may select oils that are relaxing, energizing, stress-reducing or balancing, or the therapist may have you smell the oils to choose your preference. Lavender is commonly used as an essential oil in massage.
Step3
Choose hot stone massage for a alternate sensory experience. Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles in addition to balancing energy centers in the body. The therapist may apply gentle pressure with the stones. This format is great for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage.
Step4
Opt for deep tissue massage when you need a stronger, more intense treatment. Deep tissue targets deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle are used. Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems or recovery from injury.
Step5
Consider Shiatsu, a form of Japanese bodywork that uses localized finger pressure on acupuncture meridians using a rhythmic sequence. Shiatsu massage is relaxing, yet involves firm pressure.
Step6
Try sports massage if you're an athlete or otherwise physically active. This type of massage does not focus on relaxation, but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance.
