Serving and protecting the highways and roads of Indiana are the most basic duties of an Indiana state trooper. Expanding your career by getting into drug enforcement detail can come after several years with the force. Follow the steps below to become an Indiana state trooper.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED

Step1
Print the online application at www.in.gov/isp/pdfs/recruitaplicantinformation. It is 15 pages long and very detailed. Call the Indiana State Human Resources department at (317) 232-8277 to obtain information on where to submit your finished application.
Step2
Take the written exam and be a candidate for an oral interview with the Indiana State Police committee.
Step3
Undergo a thorough background investigation that could include information regarding personal credit history, employment history and criminal background.
Step4
Take a polygraph test conducted by a professional appointed by the state. After successfully passing this test, you will be asked to take a medical exam to make sure you are fit to continue with the training.
Step5
Complete the last portion of the testing -- the superintendent's review, which will ultimately determine whether you are admitted to the training academy.

Tips & Warnings

  • The selection and testing process, plus the academy training, will take approximately seven months for candidates with no law enforcement background. If you do have experience and the necessary years to qualify, training will take approximately five months.
  • There are no exceptions or allowances made in the testing process. You must pass every portion of the exam to continue to the next one.
