How to Hike Cross Timbers Trail in Texas

Cross Timbers are two very dense belts of timber that stretch across the Oklahoma-Texas border. The trail winds along the south shore of Lake Texoma for about 14 miles, nine of which are covered in this hike. Unless you decide to use a car shuttle, plan on a Cross Timbers hike taking two or more days.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive north on US 377 from the junction of US 82 for about 15 miles to Juniper Point Park. After about 1/2 of a mile go left at the fork. Find the marked trailhead in a dirt parking lot on the left.

    • 2

Plan a car shuttle to make this a 9-mile 1-day hiking trip.

    • 3

Take the trail from Juniper Point for 2.5 miles to Cedar Bayou. The trail is well marked and easy to follow, with occasional mile markers.

    • 4

Walk past the marina along the paved road from Cedar Bayou Resort and back into the woods behind several campsites on the right.

    • 5

Stay left on the main trail at the Lost Loop fork and continue on to the Five Mile Camp, which is marked with a "5" sign.

    • 6

Watch for a large patch of poison ivy around the 8-mile marker, and wash it off at the lake if you do brush up against some.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get a camping permit at the Juniper Point Park entrance for a round trip 18-mile hike.

  • The best seasons to hike are fall through spring.
