Log splitters make your life easier by mechanically cutting logs into pieces. They are fast, reliable and get the work done in half the time it usually takes to cut logs with an axe. A log splitter is an expensive piece of equipment, so follow these steps to find the best splitter for your needs at a good price.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your budget and decide whether you have a long term or temporary need for the equipment. For small, short term projects it is advisable to rent a splitter. For ongoing or commercial usage, purchase a splitter.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want an electric, hydraulic, vertical or horizontal log splitter. Also decide whether you want a used or a new splitter.

  3. Step 3

Look for an engine that generates six to eight horsepower, for a commercial log splitter. For personal usage, look for a splitter with less horsepower. Choose brand name equipment with an extended warranty.

  4. Step 4

Visit websites to read reviews of the different models of log splitters. Look in your local newspaper to find good deals at hardware stores. Look for holiday sales and inventory clearance events. Ask for input from friends and family who own a log splitter.

  5. Step 5

Go to your local hardware store and look for the latest models of log splitters. Ask the store staff to describe the different product features and benefits. Ask for a recommendation if you are unsure which model is best for your needs. Shop around and compare prices before making a purchase.

on 10/28/2007 If you are buying a log splitter, brand name has little to do with quality, almost all gas log splitters the consumer can buy are made by the same company. Quality is dependent on 1)does it have a Honda motor or some other brand? 2)coil wrapped hoses (reduces damage from use) 3}if towable, metal or plastic fenders. Lights are usually not required unless towing after dark. Electric log splitters only generate 7 tons of splitting force as compared to 22 tons and up of a gas. Electric works great if your wood is extremely well seasoned and soft wood. Although they claim to handle wood up to 16 inches in diameter and 20 inches long, hardwoods (oak, hickory), rounds with big knots will be next to impossible. I just bought a power splitter after years of hand splitting and renting. A good splitter is around $1500, That is a lot of years of renting.
