An audiologist is a medical professional who specializes in the field of hearing diagnosis and treatments. Audiologists determine if a person is suffering from hearing loss by administering various sound tests and can write prescriptions for hearing aids if needed. If you or someone you love is suffering from a form of hearing loss, follow these suggestions to find an audiologist near you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with your doctor prior to finding an audiologist on your own. She might know of an audiologist they can refer you to.

  2. Step 2

Call your insurance plan provider and get a list of audiologists in your area. Find the offices near you and call and ask if they are accepting new patients at this time.

  3. Step 3

Search the Internet for websites that contain directories of audiologists. Narrow your search by location. If you enter a few specific search terms, the American Academy of Audiology's website will provide you with a list of audiologists near you.

  4. Step 4

Look in your local yellow pages under Audiology or Hearing. Many times audiologists will offer information in their ads regarding the types of services they offer and what insurance plans, if any, they accept.

  5. Step 5

Ask your friends and family. Many times the best referral comes from someone you know. If you are trying to find an audiologist for your child, talk to the school nurse or ask other parents.

Tips & Warnings
  • Audiologists can screen for hearing problems in people of any age, including newborns, so don't hesitate to seek an audiologist's services if you or your pediatrician suspects hearing loss in your child.
  • Don't purchase hearing aids by mail or without having been evaluated by a licensed audiologist. To be effective, hearing aids and other devices should be tailored to your prescription and fitted to your ears.
