That itchy rash just won't go away and you've decided to consult a dermatologist or skin doctor. You're probably wondering how to find a qualified dermatologist that is accepting new patients. Here are some ways to find your ideal skin doctor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check your health insurance plan to see if there are dermatologists on a preferred provider list.
Step2
Ask your family physician for a referral. Your doctor has a list of specialists that they routinely recommend.
Step3
Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. The best way to find any service provider is through word of mouth.
Step4
Search the American Academy of Dermatology website to find a nearby doctor. This search engine brings up those dermatologists within a certain distance from your home and shows the doctor's educational background and other important information.
Step5
Search the Find A Doc website for dermatologists in your city. This site scores each doctor based on training, expertise and patient opinion.
Step6
Call the dermatologists that you have selected and talk to their office staff. Ask about their office hours, the doctor's education and his or her work history. After speaking to the staff member, select the dermatologist that seems like the best fit for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to consult with your insurance company to make sure your dermatologist is on their preferred provider list before you make an appointment.
