Many find machine quilting faster than the traditional hand quilting. A solid understanding of your sewing machine is a must, but the details and time you gain from machine quilting are worth it. Lots or practice and patience yield successful results.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have the correct attachments and adjustments made for your machine. Most machines should allow you to drop the feed dogs to allow free motion quilting. If not, a cover should be available. Check the "darning" section of your machine's manual.

  2. Step 2

Start each quilt with a new quilting needle. When signs of dulling show, change the needle. Sharp needles are required to go through all three layers of fabric.

  3. Step 3

Use high quality thread. Bobbin thread should be 100% cotton. Use a different color thread for the bobbin to make the quilt reversible. Do not use hand quilting thread; it can damage your machine.

  4. Step 4

Slide quilt and hoop under the needle. You may need to remove the presser foot to do this.

  5. Step 5

Lower the needle by turning the hand wheel to start your first stitch. Remember to lower the presser foot.

  6. Step 6

Slowly sew on the marked pattern lines or seams. For beginners, it is easier to follow the block pattern, sewing directly on the seam line. This helps to keep the fabric from shifting as much.

  7. Step 7

Cut the threads at the end of quilting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set up a card table behind your machine to hold the weight of the quilt.
  • For straight lines, use a walking foot attachment.
