How to Mend a Barbed Wire Fence

A broken barbed wire fence can mean trouble, especially if there is livestock involved. The best time to repair a fence is before it falls down. Follow these steps to repair your barbed wire fence and prevent further damage or loss. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see if there are defective posts. If so, unfasten the attached wire without cutting it and then remove the post (including the stump).

    • 2

Replace the defective posts. Set the new post about two feet deep into the existing post-hole. Align it with the existing posts and ensure it is firmly in place. Pack earth around the post. When you are finished, the post should not move even with your full weight against it.

    • 3

See if you need to repair any snapped wires. If so, use a fence stretcher to pull the wire together so that the ends overlap.

    • 4

Pull apart the strands of broken wire on each side until they are separated all the way back to the first barbs. Then draw both sides together and lay them next to each other so that the barbs are side-by-side.

    • 5

Twist one of the left side wires counter clockwise over the right side wires. Then take the remaining wire on the left side and wrap it over the first wire in a clockwise motion. When wrapping the wires, wrap each wire around three times.

    • 6

      Cut off any loose ends.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 4 through 6, twisting wires from the right side over the left side this time.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a quicker wire mending fix, buy a specialty sleeve that allows the wires fit through each side. Use a crimping tool to permanently clamp the wires together.
