Things You'll Need:

  • Training
  • Cave diving equipment
  • High level of physical fitness
  1. Step 1

Research cave diving and decide if you have the special personality it takes to be a cave diver. According to experts, less than one percent of recreational divers have the knowledge, skills, attitude and judgment required to cave dive safely.

  2. Step 2

Get the training needed to become a safe cave diver. First become a certified scuba diver and build up a lot of open water diving experience. Then find a cave diving training course. Get as much experience as you can with an experienced cave diver before attempting a solo venture.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the equipment required for cave diving. This equipment is different than regular scuba diving equipment. Cave diving equipment includes: masks, fins, a thick dry suit with a hood, buoyancy control, gas supply, instrumentation, guideline and reel, a ground-down pairing knife or a parachute line cutter and lights.

  4. Step 4

Decide where you want to go cave diving. There are many places to dive across America and around the world. The most popular areas for cave diving and diver training are Florida and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

  5. Step 5

Choose when to go on your cave dive. Cave diving is not a seasonal activity, so you can dive throughout the year. However, you may need to make some equipment modifications based on the time of year and location of the dive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Study the five "Rules of Accident Analysis" that every cave diver needs to know in order to cave dive safely.
  • Do not go cave diving without the proper training, experience and equipment. Over 431 divers have died in cave diving accidents in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean since 1960.
  • Understand that no matter how much open water diving experience you have, it will not sufficiently prepare you for a cave dive. Ensure that you get cave dive training.
