How to Buy a Crock Pot

A crock pot is a convenient appliance to have as part of any kitchen. Many recipes take only about 15 minutes to assemble, then cook all day while you're away. It can also be an economical way to feed your family, as the slow cooking process tenderizes less expensive cuts of meat. There are several things to remember before you buy a crock pot.

Decide what size crock pot you'll need, based on how many people you'll typically be serving. They are available in sizes from 3 to 7 quarts. A smaller one will serve 3 to 5 people (but some larger cuts of meat like roasts might not fit), while a larger one will serve 6 to7 people. Crock pot meals make great leftovers, so that's something to consider when deciding the size.

Look for a crock pot that has a removable ceramic crock for easy cleaning. An advantage to this is that you can assemble your meal the night before and store it in the refrigerator. In the morning, simply place it in the base, plug it in and set it to its proper cooking temperature.

Examine the lid of the crock pot. Glass is preferable, as plastic doesn't hold up as well over time. Also be sure to buy one with a domed lid, to allow extra room for larger items like whole chickens. The lid should also fit inside the lip of the crock, to allow juices to run back into the crock.
