How to Change Measurement Units in WordPad

The MS accessory WordPad is a free, stripped-down version of MS Word. A lot of the higher features in MS Word are not available in WordPad, and that goes for measurements. But thousands of users primarily use WordPad due to workstations not outfitted with the expensive Word software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Open your WordPad document.
2. Go to the "View" Menu Element and drag down to "Options."
3. The "Options" window will open with the third tab, "Rich Text" selected. Change this by clicking once on the "Options" tab to the far left.
4. In the bottom of the window, you will see four options for measurements: "Inches", "Centimeters", "Points", and "Picas". Here you can switch between using either the metric or non-metric system, or the layout-specific system of points and picas, by clicking on the small circle to the left of each choice.
5. Close the options window. You should see the ruler at the top of the text window switch to the system that you have selected.

Tips & Warnings

• The measurement option in WordPad won't cross over to Word, in fact, most of your WordPad formatting may not apply in another word processor. It helps to save your files in rich text format (rtf) but you will have to open your text files in Word to see how they will appear differently.
• WordPad is best for creating simple text files. Think about whether you have occasional access to a Word-outfitted computer to "finalize" your text files. Or, if you want to keep your text files simple (for programming purposes) save your text files as .txt. This will mean that when you open them, instead of formatted text, you will just see a string of text with no line breaks (like in the accessory "Notepad").
