How to Hear the Portland Symphony

The Portland Symphony, founded in 1924, has been recognized as one of the finest symphonies of its size in the United States. The 85-member orchestra performs at Merrill Auditorium, a 1900-seat facility in downtown Portland.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Plan a trip to Portland Maine during the fall, winter or spring. The Portland Symphony's regular season begins in early October and continues through early May. They perform ten to twelve programs each season.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase tickets. Tickets to the Portland symphony may be purchased online, via telephone or at the Merrill Auditorium box office. Students, groups and subscribers receive a discount.

  3. Step 3

    Enjoy the Symphony's season. The symphony's regular season includes a dozen programs of traditional and modern classical music, many featuring guest conductors and soloists from around the world.

  4. Step 4

    Attend a "Magic of Christmas" concert. One of the highlights of the Portland Symphony's season is the series of annual "Magic of Christmas" concerts. Beginning in late November and lasting through Christmas week, the symphony entertains patrons with a host of holiday favorites.

  5. Step 5

    Share classical music with your kids at a PSO "Pops" concert. The symphony's "Pops" concert feature show tunes, popular favorites and themes, such as the Halloween program, "A Little Fright Music."

  6. Step 6

    Hear music under the stars at a summer symphony concert. During the summer months, the symphony relaxes a little and moves outdoors and out of town to the L.L. Bean Music Center in Freeport. The program is still classical, but the mood is casual. Some events are even free.
