Candles can really set the mood for a special event whether it be a dinner party or a romantic dinner for two. But, like with any flame, candles can be dangerous. Here are a few tips on how to put out a candle safely.

From Quick Guide: Candle Accents
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snuffer or spoon
  1. Step 1

Snuff your candle with a candle snuffer or spoon. This is the recommended way because you cut off the oxygen supply and therefore make it impossible for the flame to continue. Hold the snuffer over the flame for 3 seconds. After removing the candle snuffer, be sure that the wick is completely extinguished and not still slightly burning.

  2. Step 2

Blow out the candle. This is, of course, the most practical method; however, it is not recommended, since you can blow hot wax onto yourself or others. If a large pool of wax has accumulated, use a snuffer. If the candles are on a birthday cake, then a healthy puff of air should do.

  3. Step 3

Run water over the flame. Be sure that the candle is NOT in a glass holder of any kind, since the cold water mixed with the hot glass could cause it to crack and splinter. Simply hold the candle under the faucet and run water over it. Your candle will be out in no time.

  4. Step 4

Pinch the flame with your fingers. This is a time-tested party trick. It is dangerous, and it is not for kids to try at home. Even adults should be aware that this method can burn fingertips. Dip your thumb, index finger and middle finger in water and then quickly clasp your fingers around the flame and release.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never place a candle near another object that may catch fire.
  • Be sure that burning candles are safely out of reach of all pets and children.
  • Never place a candle near vents. Drafts may occur, giving the flame enough oxygen to spread.
