A useful knot for camping is the two half hitch knot. It is an extension of the single half hitch but stronger. You can use it for tying a knot to a post or ring or for boat mooring. This knot stays constant under a load, does not jam and is easy to loosen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hook your rope around whatever you want to hitch to. You can use a pole, tree branch or whatever is available.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you have plenty of free rope hanging to tie the knot. Cross the short end under the main rope.

  3. Step 3

Bring the short end under, over and down through the hole formed by the crossing of the rope. Tighten this single hitch by pushing the knot to the pole or whatever you have it hitched to.

  4. Step 4

Cross the short end under, over and down through the hole formed by the crossing rope once again. Tighten.

  5. Step 5

Increase the strength of this knot by making an extra hitch. Cross the short end under, over and down through the hole again and tighten. This knot is called the "Round Turn With Two Half Hitches."

Tips & Warnings
  • Always tie half hitches in the same direction. If you tie the first hitch by crossing the free end under to the left before you bring it over and down, do the same with the next hitch (and the next).
  • If the object you are hitching to has a small diameter, try using the "Round Turn With Two Half Hitches."
  • Synthetic rope is easier to use when practicing this knot.
