Installing a modem is no longer the chore that it used to be. With better drivers, operating systems and advances in hardware, modems are easy to install and set up. Internal modems require that the case be opened and that an available slot be present on the main board. This is not a difficult task if you follow these steps carefully.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Shut down the computer, if necessary. Remove the power cord.
Step2
Open the side panel of the case. Locate an available slot for the new modem.
Step3
Remove the slot plate in the case. Install the modem in the slot.
Step4
Reattach the side panel and secure.
Step5
Turn on the computer and follow the instructions in the operating system for driver installation, if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Several drivers ship with the Windows operating system for various modems, including some models that have been available for years. If the new modem is not in the driver database, Windows will ask for the media that contains the driver or will ask to search online to find the driver.
  • Modems come preconfigured with a selected port and interrupt request (IRQ). Often, this does not need to be changed, but occasionally it must be if there is a conflict in the system with another device.
