How to Find a Wooden Indian

Once upon a time, it was not uncommon to see a wooden Indian in the doorway of many cigar shops. The custom waned over time, and it seems now that cigar store Indians are a thing of the past. That isn't to say it is impossible to find one. There are still places that people can look, if they want to find a wooden Indian.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the obvious place--cigar stores. While mostly done away with, some shops may still have a wooden Indian inside as an aesthetic tribute to days of old. Of course, getting the proprietor to part with the item may prove to be a difficult and expensive endeavor.

    • 2

Shop around antique stores and consignment shops. Again, this may be an expensive avenue, as the popularity of the cigar store Indian peaked in the late 19th century.

    • 3

Shop online. There are a variety of websites that offer hand-carved wood crafts, including cigar store Indians. They vary in height, detail and price, but it will not be nearly as pricey as shopping for the real McCoy.

    • 4

Barter with traders. Avid collectors sometimes have their own websites devoted to offering finders fees and such for authentic cigar store Indians. Only through direct communication will you be able to find out if the collector is willing to part with any of his prizes.

Shop online auction sites, especially those that auction antiques and collectibles. This may be the quickest way to find out what is available for purchase.
