How to Start a 4-H Sewing Club
Starting a 4-H sewing club is a good way for you and your friends to share your sewing talents with local children. Although clothing construction is typically seen as a "girls-only" project, 4-H does offer sewing projects for boys as well. There are also projects that focus on good grooming and putting looks together that all children can enjoy.

1
Gather information. Contact your local extension office to start a sewing club. The youth specialist can provide the applications you need as well as forms that you must complete to meet your state's volunteer youth worker laws.
-
2
Recruit adult volunteers to help. For a sewing club, these volunteers must have some sewing experience and a sewing machine. They also must let kids use their equipment.
-
-
3
Publicize your club to prospective members and their parents. State when and where you are holding your meetings. Post advertisements in schools, libraries and churches.
-
4
Hold an organizational meeting. Elect officers. This includes an adult leader who represents your club at the county 4-H council. Set club goals that include community service.
-
5
Meet with project groups. If your group is small and about the same age, you can get by with just one project group. However, if you have different age groups and different abilities, offer a variety of projects.
-
6
Encourage members to participate in good grooming competitions and project demonstrations at county achievement day. Finished garments may be worn at the local dress revue, which is a fashion show. Each member should have one project to display in the county fair.

Tips & Warnings
4-H competitions judge the member against a scoring guide, not against other 4-H club members. For example, for a good grooming competition, it doesn't matter if one child is wearing mismatched clothing but is well-groomed. A child in expensive clothing cannot receive good marks if her hair is unruly and her fingernails are not clean.
