How to Make a Popeye Costume
As a prominent icon of the late twentieth century, Popeye is an excellent choice for a costume. The swashbuckling sailor provided a role model for a generation of youngsters (and a great slogan for the produce industry) when his "I eats me spinach" showed young fans that eating your greens can pay off. The Popeye sailor look is among to make.

1
Get a sailor's cap. Popeye's cap is the front-brimmed "captain's hat" (only white, not navy) as opposed to the traditional round cap you see on enlisted sailors. You might have to visit a novelty store for this one, unless you had ancestors in the service.
-
2
Get the coat or shirt. A sailor-style peacoat or navy coat would be best, or, if it's not cold, a blue sailor's shirt with white edging. A pair of khakis or jeans and common brown work shoes rounds off the outfit.
-
3
Get the pipe. Popeye's corncob pipe can be found at many convenience stores throughout the south, or at novelty shops. You can also search for item online.
-
4
Get bell-bottom pants. For a good Popeye look, stuff the bottom of your pants with newspaper for that flared look. Ideally, the pants should button up the front rather than zipper.
-
5
Draw a tattoo of an anchor on your forearm.
-
6
Choose your greens. Instead of carrying around a full can of spinach, be creative. Get an empty spinach can and fill it with strips of green construction paper.

Tips & Warnings
For a real Popeye look, use inflatables and flesh-toned plastic wrap to give your arms that pumped-up bicep look. Or just draw Popeye tattoos on with non-toxic marker or pen.
