Step 1
Research Mexican art history. Diego Rivera, for instance, is considered the greatest Mexican painter of the 20th century. He was married to the artist Frida Kahlo. Learn more about them by renting the DVD of "Frida," a film depicting their life. They still rank among the most influential Mexican artists.
-
Step 2
Visit museums and galleries. Mexican art is prominently featured in a number of museums and galleries around North America, Europe and in Latin America, of course. Chicago is home to the National Museum of Mexican Art. Most galleries have websites with images and information about artists working today.
-
Step 3
Make notes of the styles you like and the artists' names. Research places where works are sold, such as galleries, online sales sites, private collectors and art shows.
-
Step 4
Establish your price guidelines. If you are just starting a collection, choose a piece from an up-and-coming artist or artisan that doesn't cost too much. The more established Mexican artists cost more. It's a personal choice, but either way, art experts confirm it is a good investment.

Step 5
Look at the work of artisans as well as painters and sculptors. Mexican pottery, works in copper and silver, masks and woodcarving are also excellent items for collections.
