Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Unplug the power cord from the computer's power supply. Remove the side panel from the case and disconnect all power cables from the power supply to components and existing mainboard.
Step2
Remove the screws securing any components in place and then remove the components from the slots on the mainboard. Disconnect any other cables and wires from the mainboard. Remove all the screws securing mainboard to standoffs in case.
Step3
Remove the mainboard from the case. Most mainboards can be removed by lifting one side and then pulling the mainboard to one side, up and out of the case. If any other components that are in the case prevent you from removing the mainboard, remove the component. You can then continue removing the mainboard from the case.
Step4
Disconnect the power supply cable for the CPU fan from the mainboard. Release the fan from its clamps and gently lift it from CPU. Lay fan to one side.
Step5
Lift or slide the CPU retaining bar, and then remove the CPU from mainboard by lifting straight up. Take care not to bend any pins on the CPU. Place the CPU to one side on a piece of foam to avoid bending pins.
Step6
Install the new mainboard by following the steps in reverse order.
