Step 1
Examine your auto insurance policy to determine your medical payments (med-pay) coverage. Take the time to check with your agent to determine the exact medical payment coverage you have if you get in an accident. Make note of the coverage amount; most common is $5,000.
-
Step 2
Pull out your health insurance policy or call your insurance company. Find out if your health insurance will cover the rest of your medical bills for an accident once your med-pay from your auto policy runs out.
-
Step 3
Know what types of benefits and coverage are available to you if you were not responsible for the accident. See if either or both your auto insurance company and health insurance company will make payments under med-pay. Your insurance companies can then initiate their entitled reimbursement from the negligent party's insurance carrier.
-
Step 4
Understand the limits of your med-pay on your auto insurance. A dollar limit or time limit is stated in your insurance policy. Nevertheless, if you feel you would need more coverage, talk with your insurance companies to have them increase your coverage amounts. The time limit for med-pay coverage is usually 1 year from the date of the accident.
-
Step 5
Determine if your med-pay is enough to cover all your medical expenses if someone you love is injured in an accident with you or in your automobile.
