How to Zero-Out Reset a Treo 650

Performing a zero-out reset on your Treo 650 completely rewrites your device's internal memory and erases anything that might have been stored on the device. This type of reset is typically used if you're selling your Treo 650 or sending it in for repair. Performing a zero-out reset is tricky, but can be accomplished by following these steps.

Instructions

  1. Preparing Your Treo 650 for a Zero-out Reset

    • 1

Connect your Treo 650 to your computer through the HotSync cable.

    • 2

Perform a HotSync by pressing the button at the base of the HotSync cable. This will backup your information. You can use this backup for your next Treo or if you need to retain the contacts or calendar entries.

    • 3

Make sure there are no errors in the HotSync. Unplug the HotSync cable from the computer.

    Performing a Zero-out Reset

    • 4

Keep the cable plugged into the phone, but don't plug it back into the computer. There is also no need to plug it into a power outlet.

    • 5

Press and hold the power button (the button with the red phone) while pressing the "Up" arrow on the center navigator.

    • 6

Press the "HotSync" cradle button while still holding the "Up" and "Power" buttons.

    • 7

Recruit someone to help you with this next step. While you're still holding down the other three buttons, have that person press the "Reset" button on the back of the phone under the battery cover.

    • 8

Release all of the buttons. If the zero-out reset was done correctly, the screen of your Treo 650 should go blank and you will not be able to turn it on. Your Treo 650 will appear dead.

    • 9

Wait for your Treo 650 to wake up. This could take as long as 10 minutes. The Palm logo will appear and you will be asked to calibrate the screen as you did when you first got the Treo 650. Your zero-out reset is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you get a Palm OS logo, a rainbow-colored boot screen or anything other than a blank screen after releasing all the buttons, you have performed the zero-out reset incorrectly.

  • Make sure that while you're pressing the "Up" button you don't slip left or right while trying to press the other button simultaneously.

Hard Reset Remove the battery cover and with your stylus press the Reset button while holding down the Power button. Once you see the round Palm logo release the Power button. When you are prompted to to press Up to delete all your data, use the volume up button on the left side of the unit. This will wipe out all your calendar, contacts, photos, downloaded ringers, added programs and updates, custom settings and even your owner information.

HELP! I am desperately trying to fix my Treo 650 but cannot find an answer to my dilemma. After a power outage, several of my vital keys have new personality. Resets do not work as one of the keys acting wrong is the UP key, so I cannot do a Hard Reset. I have tried the Zero Reset as well. Is there another key that will do what the UP key does on a Hard Reset?
