A showmanship event at a horse show is similar to the halter event in that there is no rider; the horse is led around by a halter. However, in a showmanship class the judges are focusing on the person, or showman, more than the horse. Follow these steps to compete in a showmanship event with a horse.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Groom your horse thoroughly before the event. Although the judge is focusing on you as a showman, your horse's appearance is representative of your care for the animal.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your appearance is neat. You should be as well-groomed as your horse. Wear clean, appropriate clothing.

  3. Step 3

Practice leading your horse before the event. Your horse should willingly walk and trot with you, as well as back up and turn by pivoting. Remember, the more skilled your horse is, the better the judge will see you as a horse owner and showman.

  4. Step 4

Lead your horse into the show ring once the showmanship event begins. Follow the judge's directions. Usually, all competitors enter the arena and line their horses up on one side. Then, the judge will ask each person to lead their horse out of line and perform some action or pattern of actions, such as trotting or backing up.

  5. Step 5

Keep your head up and maintain eye contact with the judge. Smile, stand up straight and relax. You want to appear completely confident and under control.

  6. Step 6

Always be aware of where the judge is standing. Remember, as a showman you're presenting your horse to the judge, so you should never stand between them and the animal.
