How to Get a Ring Off of a Swollen Finger

Many people have gotten a ring stuck on a swollen finger, whether it was due to pregnancy, general weight gain or a ring that's too small. While it's not impossible to get the ring off, it can be a little trying and may involve a little bit of discomfort.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lather soap all over your finger. Put your finger under warm water. Pull on it until it slips loose.

  2. Step 2

Envelop your finger from the ring up as tight as you can with clingy plastic food wrap. Grease up the ring and your swollen finger below the clingy wrap. Wait a couple of minutes ,then pull the ring and the clingy wrap at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Spray window cleaner on the ring. This works better than lotion because it doesn't damage the precious stones and leaves the ring shiny when you finally get the ring off your swollen finger.

  4. Step 4

Wrap tape around your finger just past the ring. Leave the tape on for 30 minutes. Ice your hand while holding it above your heart for another 15 minutes. Take off the tape and spray window cleaner on your finger. Twist the ring around your finger while pulling it off.

  5. Step 5

Take a piece of thick string and wrap it very tightly down to the ring starting from the top of your finger. Put the end of the string under the ring then pull up slowly working up over the top of the string.

Tips & Warnings
  • Every one of these ideas involve some sort of pain as you pull the ring off. The only sure way to remove it without pain is to cut the ring off.

on 12/18/2009 Awesome!! Windex and some saran wrap worked for me!! So glad I googled this. I was getting worried! I'm pregnant and have swelling in my fingers, was afraid I wouldn't be able to get my wedding band off. A little painful, but I got it off in about 1 minute!

on 9/22/2009 I cannot believe the Windex worked as well as it did. I had stuggled with my ring for 2 days, I got poison ivy on my finger under my ring but could not get the ring off. My finger was swollen & the ring had cut into the poison ivy blister. I was afraid the windex would sting but it did not. I soaked my hand in some icy water for a few minutes and tryed the spraying the windex. I noticed movement right away and kept rocking the ring toward the knuckle. I applied more windex and the ring kept inching off. Yes it was painful, but not as bad as the other things I had tryed (soap, lotion, oil). Who wuld have thought Windex would let the ring slide so easily??? Thanks for the tips everybody!

on 7/1/2009 The Windex worked for me. After icing the finger for a few minutes and holding it above my head for 10 minutes, I did the following: I kept applying large amounts of Windex under both sides of the ring, and then grasped it with a face cloth (for a better grip). I then twisted the ring side to side and pulled upwards. It was slow and very painful, and I kept re-applying Windex over and over again, as it quickly wore off. The worst part was getting the ring over the knuckle. The knuckle and the swollen tissue on top of it was probably 20-25% larger than the ring. After 5 minutes or so (it seemed like an eternity) the ring was finally off.

One final word of caution, the purple finger mentioned by several people means there is reduced or no blood flow to those portions of the finger. This will result in permanent tissue damage if left unchecked. Do NOT wait long to address the issue. I...

on 5/31/2009 First, reduce swelling by icing finger or holding finger above the heart for 10-20 minutes. Second, spray Windex over finger.Third, and most importantly, begin to wiggle the ring in a back and forth motion upwards over knuckle.Pulling the ring upward and twisting only makes skin folds get stuck under ring. Just wiggle the ring lightly over the knuckle.Repeat the Windex over and over until the ring is free of the knuckle. My husband had an allergic reaction to a ring I gave him. His finger was very swollen and I was considering the E.R. or a jeweler. It was only able to come off after we read a comment at a jewelry site that explained how pulling and twisting the ring only makes the skin fold under the ring.It came off after we iced it, Windexed it, and then lightly wiggled it upward over the knuckle.Good luck. Hope this helps.

on 1/17/2009 I tried doing all of this and my finger turned blue from the lack of circulation in my middle finger. I had to go the hospital; NO MORE RINGS FOR ME!
