Getting gifts is one of the most fun parts of a wedding. Selecting the right stores to register for gifts not only makes it more likely you'll get what you want, but also makes it easier on your guests when they go to buy them. Use these steps to help you pick stores for your wedding registry.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • List of your favorite stores
  • List of items you need

Step1
Think about what stores you like. Include each store you frequently go to and those that have items you like.
Step2
Assess your needs. Walk through your current residences (or residence if you already live together) and catalog the items you have and those you need. Consider common items such as glasses, dishware and other kitchen items as well as decorations and bedding.
Step3
Figure out which stores you like carry the items you need. Use this to narrow your list of options. From this list, think about what stores are located in the areas most of your guests live in. For example, someone in a smaller town may be near a Target, but larger department stores such as Macy's may not be in every small town.
Step4
Consider which stores in the narrowed down list carry the most items you want and need. Make sure these stores have an array of items and prices, and the right selection for what you want.
Step5
Research the process to register for wedding gifts with each store you'll possibly be using. Choose what fits best with your needs and schedule. Many major stores allow you to register online. Additionally, most stores keep your wedding registry online, allowing guests to conveniently purchase from a store you select even if it is not in their town.
Step6
Select the stores and register. Make sure you know the policy of each store when it comes to updating the registry. Have them clarify how quickly items are taken off the registry once purchased and whether you are able to purchase any items not received at a discount after the wedding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan to register for gifts at least 6 months before the big day. This way guests can use your registry for the bridal shower, engagement parties or other pre-wedding festivities.
  • Make sure the store you register with carries enough of the item you desire in stock. If you want eight place settings, make sure the store doesn't only have six.
  • If you do register 6 or more months before the wedding, keep an eye on the items in your registry and update as needed. Sometimes items get discontinued.
