Women are notorious for changing their wardrobes every season to fit the current trends and fads. Creating a winter wardrobe of basic staples allows you to keep a wardrobe for many years, adding a few trendy pieces as you want, rather than starting fresh every season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a wool coat in any length and color. A longer, neutral colored coat looks more professional while a bright colored shorter version looks more dramatic.

  2. Step 2

Invest in a tailored wool blend suit, classically cut with a good shape. A pants suit is best for the cold, in black or neutral color to best match with any colored shirt. Also find a black evening dress with more coverage than a typical summer dress. Winter is the time to be more conservative.

  3. Step 3

Buy winter pants. Choose two types of jeans, basic everyday and dressy, making sure the denim is thick and free of rips and frays and the cut is fitted and classic. Also find a pair of black trousers or khakis that can be dressed up or down for work or play.

  4. Step 4

Purchase warm "over" clothing such as blazers, wraps or pashmina scarves. Find wool blend sweaters and thin v-necks in your favorite colors.

  5. Step 5

Think layers. Find classic button shirts, long sleeve and short sleeve colored T-shirts, tights or stockings, trendy and classic skirts and brightly colored camisoles to wear with suits, blazers, sweaters and wraps.

  6. Step 6

Put away open-toed shoes and sandals. Invest in a nice pair of black high-heeled boots that look great with jeans, dress pants and business suits. Have closed-toed shoes such as a pair of black leather pumps or ballet flats.

  7. Step 7

Use colored accessories to liven your neutral basics. Find a larger purse to accommodate extra winter items such as lotion and gloves. Wear a brightly colored scarf and jewelry to tie everything together.
