1
Assign parts to family members. Cast Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds, Wisemen and the Angel Gabriel. Dress extra cast members as animals like sheep, oxen, donkeys and pigs. Use a baby doll for Jesus if there are not babies in the family.
-
2
Gather costumes from the closets. Use bathrobes, sheets, long jackets and long dresses. Do not worry about color or exactness--it is part of the fun.
-
-
3
Make a stable backdrop. Use several large pieces of drawing paper and sketch a stable or go extravagant and use actual pieces of wood.
-
4
Have an adult, or well read child, read the story of Jesus' birth from the Bible.
-
5
Assign an adult to direct children onto the "stage" when it is time for their part. Have the actors stand in their places until the play is complete.
-
6
Run through a brief dress rehearsal early in the evening so that the actors will be familiar with their places during the play.
-
7
Lead children and adults in Christmas carols as they pertain to the story. Sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" after the part of the Angel Gabriel is read.
