How to Start a Muskrat Farm

Muskrats are prized for their dense fur. They were so named because of the musk gland near the base of the tail, and live in wetlands, where they play a very important role of balancing the food web. Trapping muskrats began in the 19th century; because of the value of the pelts, farming muskrats has become a lucrative practice.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Learn the regulations regarding muskrat farming by contacting the Department of Wildlife or by going online.
Step2
Find out about the nutritional needs of muskrats by going to such sites as Hinterland's Who's Who. Purchase muskrat feed through commercial animal food vendors.
Step3
Apply for a license to become a muskrat breeder. Information is available online or through the state government. Regulations and costs will vary from state to state.
Step4
Keep the premise where the muskrats are housed in a clean condition. Change the flooring material regularly.
Step5
Provide pens for the animals that are safe and comfortable and that prevents the animals escaping to the wild, or wild animals from entering the pens. The pens can be constructed of wire mesh. As muskrats are sociable creatures, they really like to be able to see each other.
Step6
Keep a record of the animal's health and report any contagious diseases the animals may suffer to the government. They are particularly susceptible are Tyzzer's disease and tularemia.
