Muskrats are prized for their dense fur. They were so named because of the musk gland near the base of the tail, and live in wetlands, where they play a very important role of balancing the food web. Trapping muskrats began in the 19th century; because of the value of the pelts, farming muskrats has become a lucrative practice.
