How to Eat Healthy at A&W

A&W Restaurants are known for their root beer and root beer floats, not to mention their fried foods. Eating healthy is not easy at an A&W. However, watch your calorie, fat and carbohydrate intake and it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which is the healthiest, low calorie item on the adult menu. It has 440 calories, 19g of fat and 34g of carbs.

    • 2

Order the kids' hamburger instead of an adult-sized, high-calorie burger. The kids' burger has 420 calories, 22g of fat and 35g of carbs.

    • 3

Enjoy a bowl of chili instead of French fries. The chili is 190 calories, 2g of fat and 22g of fat. It also contains no trans fat. The large fries have 430 calories, 18g of fat, 61g of carbs and 5 and a half grams of trans fat per order.

    • 4

Order a plain hot dog for the kids, which is 280 calories, 17g of fat and 22g of fat. Skip the fries and order chili for them if they'll eat it.

    • 5

Chow down one of A&W's burgers but have them leave off the mayo, bacon and cheese, which will save you a ton of calories and fat. Eat the burger without the top bun to save even more.

    • 6

Choose a diet soda or diet root beer instead of a Coke or regular root beer and save yourself up to 460 calories.

    • 7

Ask for the A&W Diet Root Beer in your root beer float instead of regular A&W Root Beer if you want to have something sweet after your meal. The medium size has 170 calories, 3g of fat, no trans fat, and 30g of carbs, which saves you 180 calories.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unfortunately, every sandwich on the restaurant's menu has at least 3g of trans fat. The fries have at least 4g per order. Trans fat has been proven to raise bad cholesterol levels and therefore increase the chance of heart disease.

  • Stay away from the Original Bacon Double Cheeseburger which is the most fattening thing on the menu. It has 800 calories, 48g of fat and 47g of carbs. It also has 4g of trans fat.

  • Avoid the Reese's Polar Swirl ice cream which is the most fattening dessert on the menu. It has 740 calories, 14g of fat and 97g of carbs for the medium size. The M&M Polar Swirl isn't much better. It's only 30 calories less and has 16g of fat with 107g of carbs.

  • Don't order the Cheese Curds with your meal. They have 570 calories, 21g of fat and 27g of carbs per order.
