It's time to study for your next test. The teacher announces that it's going to be a vocabulary test. No matter what the subject matter, there are a number of things you can do to prepare so you get a good grade. Once you've mastered this study skill, you should find it easier to take other tests as well.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write down chapters, pages and sections that you need to know. Ask the teacher what format the test is: matching, fill-in-the-blank, written definitions or other possibilities. Also, find out if you need to spell the vocabulary words correctly.

  2. Step 2

Read the material that is going to be covered on the test. This is one step that you absolutely cannot skip.

  3. Step 3

Watch for words that are highlighted, italicized or in bold type. These may very well be words the teacher has put on the test. Also, check the list of words at the end of the reading sections and the end of the chapters.

  4. Step 4

List the words that may be on the test. Just becoming familiar with the spelling of the word helps imprint it in your mind. As you write the word, you are spelling it. Also define it, say it out loud and use it in a sentence.

  5. Step 5

Devise mnemonic clues that help you remember the word. Usually the sillier the device, the easier it is. This also helps relieve some tension while you study.

  6. Step 6

Listen carefully to any instructions the teacher may give when it's test time. Students often rush to start their test and miss valuable clues the teacher gives them.

  7. Step 7

Skim the test before you begin. Answer the questions you know first. If it's a matching test, be sure to mark off the words you have used, unless they may be used more than one time. If it's a fill-in-the-blank test, be sure to spell the word correctly. If you are required to write the definition of the word, complete as much as possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vocabulary naturally increases through contact with written word. Make a reading a habit you perform daily for a minimum of 15 minutes or more. Whether it's for information or for pleasure, just be sure to read.
  • If you don't know a word from reading it in context, look it up in the dictionary. It takes only a few seconds.
  • When you finish the test, go over your answers if you have some time left. Make sure you followed the directions.
